Before I get to the main point of today’s post, to give you a flavour of how Smaug greeted me this morning... well, it went something like this:
Suffice to say, the clear up took several hours and I was not a happy camper. So onto the main event.
I love the Matilda, or A12 Infantry Tank Mk2 if you are a nerd. My love stems from the Commando book ‘Matilda On The March’, a stirring tale of Sergeant Tom Nelson and his makeshift crew, cut off from their unit, trying to make their way home. It’s like Ice Cold In Alex, but more Germans get clobbered on the way. Of course, the real star of the show is Eliza, the tank itself and the real Queen of the Desert. What I liked about it is that it was surprisingly grown up. The action was not at all cartoon-like and one of the crew, Sid Denshaw, was suffering from PTSD. Not something you tend to get in a comic, indeed, it is more gritty than many war films I have seen. Of special interest is the inclusion of Vickers Light tanks and A13s. Again, not common but clearly the artist knew his stuff.
So my Christmas build this year will be my very own Eliza. Not that I haven’t had several over the past 40+ years, but this will probably be the last. I’ve got three in Caunter already, so Eliza will be in plain light stone so she can soldier on to Alamein and final victory: with Tom, Joe, Alan and Sid safe inside.

Not even a Kubelwagon can defeat a Matilda! |
🐪 to go means for the next two nights I will be busy with scalpel and glue, whilst the epic sound of Maurice Jarre echoes around the room. I’m off now to prepare my traditional Christmas cheese board. Just a little something to keep my strength up while crossing the Negev. TTFN!
