NZ Pacific doctors deployed for mental health support
Torika Tokalau 14:23, Mar 30 2022 A group of Pacific medical professionals from New Zealand will be among the first medical teams to visit Tonga following a series of devastating events in the country.
The eight-member team from the Pasifika Medical Association left Auckland on Wednesday to offer mental health support to Tongans still reeling from the January volcanic eruption and tsunami, and an Omicron outbreak.
Tonga has only a few trained psychologists on the island. The tsunami, which was generated following the underwater Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano eruption, left three people dead. Veteran journalist Kalafi Moala, the publisher and managing director of Taimi Media Network in Nuku’alofa, said the psychological trauma from the events on Tongans was much more extreme than the physical damage caused. Covid-19 update: 22 further deaths, 15,250 new community cases, 830 people in hospital
31/03/2022..There have been 15,250 new cases of Covid-19 in the community and 22 more deaths reported in New Zealand today. Case numbers are continuing to decline, with today's seven day rolling average at 14,515, compared to 16,949 a week ago.
Auckland continues to have the most community cases with 2708 reported today, up slightly from yesterday's 2691. The Canterbury DHB has the second most cases with 2379, down from 2535 yesterday.
The rest of the cases were in the Northland (662), Waikato (1352), Bay of Plenty (825), Lakes (348), Hawke's Bay (917), MidCentral (812), Whanganui (360), Taranaki (608), Tairāwhiti (201), Wairarapa (146), Capital and Coast (1,009), Hutt Valley (587), Nelson Marlborough (729), South Canterbury (305), Southern (1212) and West Coast (77) DHBs. In Auckland and Capital Coast and Hutt Valley DHBs the outbreak has gone up quite quickly and down again quite quickly, he said. Click here RNZ news

School looks at its history in bid to move on from 'outdated' block names
Robin Martin 30/03/2022...A Taranaki school's decision to canvas opinion on whether it should change the names of its classroom blocks has stirred up a range of emotions. New Plymouth Girls' High School wants to know whether names such as O-Block and B-Block have had their day and should be replaced with something more inspirational.
The school's origins date back to 1885 when 20 young women enrolled at New Plymouth High School.By 1914, the girls had their own institution and its sprawling campus today reflects the architectural developments of the next century.
Principal Jacqui Brown admitted the existing building names were pretty matter of fact. The letter names are currently O for Old Block, B for Brick Block, N for New Block and R for ... well that one's a little bit uncertain. Click here RNZ news

New Orleans to 'unban' jazz from schools
16:14, Mar 25 2022 The school board in the city where jazz took root is preparing to undo a little-known 1922 rule that bans jazz music and dancing in public schools.Officials tell The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate that the policy has racist origins, as its creators sought at the time to distance New Orleans schoolchildren from the African Americans who created the genre.
The rule has been ignored for decades. Jazz is taught in some schools and marching bands accompanied by dance teams are a fixture of Carnival season parades.
In this instance and in this instance only we’re glad that the policy was ignored by our students, by our schools,” board member Katherine Baudouin said. “Our schools played a major role in the development of jazz. Supermarket duopoly looks safe after minister indicates he won't overrule ComCom

But that may be a losing battle after Commerce Minister David Clark appeared to confirm in Parliament on Tuesday such a move was not on the immediate horizon.The Commerce Commission decided against recommending that Countdown and Foodstuffs should be forced to sell some of their stores to help make way for a third supermarket group when it completed a $3 million market study into the $22b groceries industry earlier this month.

Dominant Ko Jin-young turns sights on Chevron Championship at Mission Hills
Ewan Murray 31/03/2022..It seems fitting that the world of male golf is giddy with excitement over the possibility of Tiger Woods making an unlikely return at next week’s Masters. Before then Ko Jin-young has scope to build on the kind of run reminiscent of Woods in his pomp. The major year does not in fact begin at Augusta National on 7 April; on Thursday, Ko and co tee it up at the rebranded Chevron Championship at Mission Hills.
Since last July Ko has secured six LPGA Tour victories. This run in just 11 tournaments includes a tie for second, two shared sixths and a tied fourth. Ko’s 60th place at the Evian Championship appears disastrous in context of her otherwise imperious form. Ko has returned 33 successive under-par rounds. Tiger-esque? Too right.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern underlines income and support measures
Jacinda Ardern has marked a range of living cost measures outlined in last year's Budget - some of which are set to come into effect tomorrow.Ministry of Social Development estimates compared to 2017 policy settings: 364,000 beneficiaries will be better off by on average $109 per week, increasing to $133 per week during the 2022 winter period.
109,000 beneficiaries with children will be better off by on average $175 per week, increasing to $207 per week during the 2022 winter period. 255,000 beneficiaries without children are estimated to be better off by on average $81 per week, increasing to $101 per week during the 2022 winter period.
In February, the government confirmed the minimum wage would increase by $1.20, bringing it to $21.20 per hour, starting from tomorrow. In a statement, Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety Michael Wood said the increase to the minimum wage would benefit about 300,000 workers."For someone working a 40-hour week on the minimum wage, Click here RNZ news

How can a cold body like Pluto have volcanic eruptions?
The Conversation 30/03/2022..In this context, "recently" means probably no more than a billion years ago. That's old, of course – and there is no suggestion that volcanoes are still active – but it's only a quarter the age of the Solar System and no one knows how Pluto brewed up the heat needed to power these eruptions.
The news, coming nearly seven years after NASA's New Horizons probe made its spectacular flyby of Pluto on July 14, 2015, is thanks to analysis of images and other data by a team led by Kelsi Singer of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado.
Singer's team draw particular attention to a mountainous feature named Wright Mons, which rises 4-5km above its surroundings. It is about 150km across its base and has a central depression (a hole) 40-50km wide, with a floor at least as low as the surrounding terrain.. Click here

Will Smith deserves to be arrested and sued for Oscars slap, says Jim Carrey
Jennie-Louise Kendrick 30/03/2022..Jim Carrey was "sickened by the standing ovation" Will Smith was given shortly after he slapped Chris Rock during the live broadcast of the 2022 Academy Awards.
During an interview with CBS Mornings' Gayle King, the Yes Man actor implied Smith should be arrested for the "selfish" act that "cast a pall over everybody's shining moment" When King noted that anyone else would have been ejected from the ceremony and perhaps arrested, Carrey responded, "he should have been".
"You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face 'cos they said words. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Smith will not face criminal charges for the slap as Rock declined to file a police report. Carrey claimed had he been in the comic's situation, he'd sue. Just fabulous' - Porirua mayor Anita Baker welcomes opening
30/03/2022..The new Transmission Gully motorway will open up the Wellington region and bring in more business, a local mayor says. The official opening ceremony for the much-delayed motorway has finally taken place, with the road opening to the public some time on Thursday.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, National Party deputy leader Nicola Willis, and MPs and mayors from across the region were at the ceremony. Ardern said with a shorter journey each day for about 25,000 vehicles, daily productivity would increase by 1640 hours, "meaning less time spent in cars and more time at work and with family".
Transport Minister Michael Wood says it was one of the most challenging road projects in New Zealand. Porirua mayor Anita Baker was one the attendees and said Transmission Gully was "huge" for the region. Click here RNZ news

England need to work with young batters despite the inevitable failures
Mark Ramprakash 31/03/2022..Another series defeat and England have now won one of their past 17 Tests. Whatever decisions are made over the next few weeks I expect this run to continue for a good while yet because, put simply, where you need a nucleus of quality, experienced players at the heart of a Test team they have a vacuum.
Particularly in this form of the game, the lack of experience countering different conditions is unquestionably a disadvantage. England has an oversupply of young white-ball talent, players who can come in and play brilliantly from the off.
But to succeed at the highest level of the red-ball game there are no short cuts – a batter needs to put in the hours grooving a repeatable technique that can stand up under pressure against the best bowlers in the world. Protest donations went into bank account of man with history of unpaid debt
8:04 am 31/03/2022...Tim Brown, Otago-Southland Reporter. A man whose personal bank account was used to receive donations for the Parliament protest is bankrupt and has been declared insolvent three times.
Jamie Patrick Mansfield has built a social media following by posting antivax and conspiratorial content as Jae Ratana. He often livestreamed events from the protest in Wellington, but also posted similarly conspiratorial content for months before the occupation.
However, the 35-year-old, who is also known as Jamie Murray, has a history of unpaid debt. Mansfield was first declared bankrupt after applying for the process himself in the Rotorua District Court in December 2008, at which time he listed his occupation as unemployed. Click here RNZ news

NZ Idol runner-up Michael Murphy admits relief at not winning on new TVNZ show
James Croot 07:45, Mar 26 2022..Michael Murphy has admitted to relief at not winning the first-ever edition of New Zealand Idol. Now in his mid-30s, the then 17-year-old Taupō schoolboy finished runner-up to Ben Lummis in the 2004 competition after public votes via text were tallied up.
Speaking to James Mustapic on the opening episode of the Dunedin-raised comedian’s new show on one-time Kiwi pop-culture icons who disappeared from the public eye, Abandonment Issues (which begins streaming on TVNZ OnDemand today)
“I knew what they were going to do for the winner’s album – and I didn’t really want to do that. I wanted to take a little bit more time. While Lummis’ single They Can’t Take That Away stayed at No. 1 for seven weeks after the series ended, his album One Road, released within a month of his victory, sold just 45,000 and was apparently described by Idol judge and music producer Paul Ellis.
