Diamond Hearts: The Gruosi Diamond

The Gruosi Diamond the largest heart-shaped black diamond in the world.  Weighing 115.34 carats, this heart-shaped diamond is the centerpiece of a necklace made of 58.77 carats of smaller black diamonds, 378 white diamonds and 14.10 carats of tsavorite garnets set in white gold.
The diamond gets its name from the Swiss jeweller Fawaz Gruosi who is credited for starting the current enthusiasm for black diamond jewelry.  He launched the current fashion for black diamonds in 1996 by creating some stunning collections of jewelry and watches set with black diamonds.
Found in India, the rough diamond weighed 300.12 carats.  It was originally planned to be cut in an oval shape but the stone proved to be fragile and difficult to work with.  The decision was made to cut the diamond in a heart shaped despite considerable loss of carat-weight.  The final weight loss after cutting and polishing was approximately 184.78 carats.
Black diamonds, also called "carbonados" from the Portuguese word for charcoal, differ in composition from other diamonds.  White diamonds are formed from pure carbon while most colored diamonds get their color from impurities within the carbon itself.  Black diamonds are different.  Tiny mineral inclusions into the stone, predominately of iron and the iron oxide minerals magnetite and hematite, give black diamonds their dark color.
